I try to ensure that the C: dating Drive contains purely system files, installed programs etc. So I tend to set up my systems in a way that benefits from (a) reduced system disk activity by placing the swapfile on another partition – (b) isolate the dating Temp Internet files for reduced fragmentation - (c) dating Modify the "My Documents" shortcut to point to an area on the F: drive... for the following reasons (see the associated a,b,c below) :- (a) In Windows XP, the Swapfile can be re-positioned onto another drive by using right-clicking on “My Computer”, Choosing the advanced tab and selecting the change option under the Virtual Memory details. (b) Fragmentation (a topic, all by itself) of files cause slow disk read/writes – Internet browsing creates a colossal amount of spurious files, these files greatly contribute to the fragmentation problem - repositioning the creation of these files reduces the need to defrag the C: drive – Placing these files re-formatting the E: drive on a frequent basis, performs an instant defrag (by removal) of the colossal amount of these spurious files – the plus point being that it gets rid of any infected files, pronto!.
