| Next, I came back and it was still churning. I began to get suspicious, so thought I'd look and see what was happening on the computer. Went to the pantie Start menu, and all programs had disappeared. In fact, just about everything had been wiped from the disk, and I couldn't run any pantie Windows components which weren't already running either. The only thing which was still there was the _RESTORE folder. I rebooted (not such a good idea in retrospect) and it came up with "invalid system disk" before loading anything. pantie Then had to re-install the OS from the recovery disk, with the idea that I could run "system restore" using a restoration point in the _RESTORE folder. Unfortunately, reinstalling the OS overwrites all previous data in the _RESTORE folder, so everything had been deleted. At this point, it was necessary to run a data recovery program (from a CD which I burned on my laptop) and find deleted sectors on the disk. This didn't work so well, and it wasn't possible to find all files, so lots of family photos, documents etc were lost. |
