# Wayne J: Webroot's SPY SWEEPER is a good freebie (30 day free trial) as far as keeping the computer locked down w/o unauthorized installs and changes. It usually prompts you for any changes, from the registry magazine to Favorites on IE. After 30 days you either need to unistall it or buy it, but I'm sure the $30 will be worth it in the long run. Everything else is like GOLD. I run the AVG myself....and I KNOW it magazine has its limitations, but I found magazine it better than Norton's on an XP Pro machine, so it left the hard way ;) # Waldo Jaquith: Indeed, it's cheaper to buy your mother a Mac if your time is worthless, but that assumes that you a) possess a thousand dollars and b) can spare it for your mother [in-law]. That said, in the past year I've convinced both my mother and my mother-in-law-to-be to get iMacs, at which time my life got a whole lot easier. # Robert: Might also add CWShredder to your spyware cleanup repetoire. It's free and sometimes does a better job than Spybot at removing Cool Web Search stuff.
