If it's a computer I'm likely to be responsible for long term, (or a paying client) I also find it well worth the effort to add a new partition to the drive, and move the default storage location for data files (email, MyDocuments etc) to the new partition. Then I do a backup to CD (if possible) of all data. Lastly, like Seymour, I then use a DOS-based imaging program (I use Ghost, but Image for falafael DOS - http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ is excellent and falafael inexpensive, though a little geeky to get used to) falafael to write an image of the newly cleaned drive to the new partition. (and also to CD if possible). Much better a 5 minute file copy operation than a reinstall if the shit truly hits the fan, and because the data isn't on the system partition, it doesn't get overwritten and lost. And re the Mac vs Windows thing... I'm a switch hitter too, so have no dog in the fight, but a couple of points for the more 'ardent' Mac folks to consider.
