At that point in the month many of them didn't have two nickles to rub together. Literally. I worked in public health for dirty humor several years. I'm not denigrating the victims, I'm just stating a fact that I know to be true. I also work in the health-care system, and you are correct in what you've seen. I've seen it as well. Indeed, a fair number of the poor people had no way to get out of the city -- no car, no money for a bus or plane, and really nowhere to go even if they do get out -- hotels from NO to Memphis were all booked up.
