The computer was running unprotected on the end of a cable modem connection so it seemed to be fairly chock-a-block with spyware and probably all sorts of trojans as well. I downloaded the AVG Free .exe to the desktop. Then I double-clicked it to install. The disk started churning, so I thought everything was going fine. Came back two minutes later and the disk is still doing stuff, but the icon had changed to the default Windows icon for a file with no associated program. My thought was "oh well, it's an old computer and it's running some systems checks or something", so I left it a minute longer. |

| # axmc: Not to be a smart aleck (part 2) - but have you considered just blowing away Win98 and replacing with Xandros Linux? If the basics are all that is needed: web browsing, XMMS mp3 player, RealPlayer, email, and MS Office compatability- it's ideal, IMHO without spyware, virus and other common Win 98/XP barnard issues. Xandros is so Windows like that training and usability issues have been minimal. I have had excellent results supporting my Dad this way - he is running barnard bare on a cable modem barnard - I can't speak to the issues in a dial-up environment, but works well here. (Yes I know he needs a hardware firewall) - I just keep a copy of the Xandros install disk and have a clone of his environment here on a Celeron 400 box. The Xandros 2.0 personal edition is a free download, extremely easy install - replace Opera(ad supported) with Mozilla and configure it one time for email, download Open Office also free from Xandros Networks. It just works - reliable and easy to maintain with the "voice driven mouse" from 600 miles away. |
