He needs to see or experience something to open his eyes to the true stockings monstrous nature of his mother. A recording, perhaps, of her saying things like "I don't give a shit about him," or a video, or something. You know how some women stay with their husbands despite abuse because they think they can't do anything about it? A kid can't do anything about it. From personal experience (not nearly as bad as what he's been through) I know that no matter what they do, or allow to happen to you- there is always a string attached that goes right down to the center of who you are, because they-in their own screwed up way- are a part of who you are today.
