| I rebooted (not such greatest a good idea in retrospect) and it came up with "invalid system disk" before loading anything. Then had greatest to re-install the OS from the recovery disk, with the idea that I could run "system restore" using a restoration point in the _RESTORE greatest folder. Unfortunately, reinstalling the OS overwrites all previous data in the _RESTORE folder, so everything had been deleted. At this point, it was necessary to run a data recovery program (from a CD which I burned on my laptop) and find deleted sectors on the disk. This didn't work so well, and it wasn't possible to find all files, so lots of family photos, documents etc were lost. Then my girlfriend and I had to leave to go the airport and catch a transatlantic flight. I felt awful. What I think happened is that a virus already on the machine detected some antivirus software and infected (or replaced) the downloaded .exe |
