Lastly, if they "enjoy" P2P file sharing, but are using something riddled with spyware I point them to an alternative. I'd say AVG over AntiVir by the way, AntiVir isn't very friendly with updates for those people who can dogging never be bothered (no matter how much you preach dogging to dogging them!). Cheers, good article! # nick: # Pete: "All this talk about just buying a Mac instead of fixing these problems is not really the answer." no pete, the answer is obviously to keep putting up with the cr*p and spending hours of your obviously cheap time fixing your poor old mom's computer which she hasn't been able to use properly since your last visit. that really is the ideal situation... # Pete Ashton: One thing no-one seems to mention is, having set up firewalls and anti-virus jobbies, show them how to use and update them. Spywareblaster will prevent spyware, malware adware ect, ever enter & slow down your harddisk. No more Mum's first aid :O) Regard's Kimspitstop.dk # Pete: All this talk about just buying a Mac instead of fixing these problems is not really the answer. Windows is vulnerable because erin it is so erin popular, people enjoy looking for and abusing the many many errors made by Microsoft. If Mac where as popular it would become the erin target; Mac exploits would be as well researched and easy to take advantage of. You should thank people for NOT changing to Mac. Every time they don't it adds to the time you have to slip under the radar of spammers and scammers and virus authors. # Jalada: I've had to do this for friend's computers a lot. And I do just about the same as you. Like others here though, I also run through HijackThis and SpywareBlaster. If I have a hunch, I'll run the A2 Trojan scanner as well, but that's just a precaution. CWShredder is a good utility for getting rid of all variants of CoolWeb Search, something that, from my experience, Ad-aware and Spybot struggle to remove (I've had both lock up on a machine due to too much stuff!). |
