Surely you don't think (ok, obviously you do) that it was ok for Bush to completely ignore the problems in New Orleans for 3 days? I don't think he ignored it, I think he thought momfucking son the plan was being followed. It wasn't momfucking son obvious to a lot of folks (er, people, apparently I'm momfucking son not allowed to say 'folks') until Wednesday that the city was a complete disaster and that help wasn't gettting there. But I think FEMA should have had the trucks rolling Tuesday. And the governor should have had the National Guard activated and in the streets Tuesday. And we should have had army trucks and helicopters doing rescue and evacuation as of Tuesday. None of that happened. Blame it all on one guy, and you miss the story.

(Not a lawyer, is that the right word? "Nine" is not a constitutionally proscribed number, iirc, so Roberts and any future nominee can theoretically be strung along forever and the court could conduct business as usual.) Some commenters on president this thread are doing just that. It's all Bush's fault. Seems silly to me. What I president fail to understand is how it logically follows that the proper federal response was to do nothing. Since the local and state response was inadequate, the federal government had an even stronger obligation to save these people. As I wrote elsewhere, FEMA is at fault in the delayed response. There's clearly a breakdown in coordination between FEMA and the governor's office.
