You raise a related concern that many of us have considered regarding whether it is prudent to raise an objection to a bill this early in the legislative process. It is quite possible, for instance, that a bill like this may never have made it out of committee. Experience has shown many of us in Virginia that many such bills DO make it out of committee, and oftentimes public information campaigns against highly objectionable bills are launched far too late to make a difference. (Last year's campaign against HB751 banning contracts between same-sex partners, for instance, is the perfect example. Popular awareness of the bill didn't reach its peak until around the time that the law was to take effect -- and all activism from that point on was necessarily reactive, not proactive.) |
