The disk started churning, so I thought everything was going fine. Came back two minutes later and the disk is still doing stuff, but the icon had changed to the default Windows icon for a file with no associated program. My thought was "oh well, it's an old author computer and it's running some systems checks or something", so author I left it author a minute longer. Next, I came back and it was still churning. I began to get suspicious, so thought I'd look and see what was happening on the computer. Went to the Start menu, and all programs had disappeared. In fact, just about everything had been wiped from the disk, and I couldn't run any Windows components which weren't already running either. The only thing which was still there was the _RESTORE folder. I rebooted (not such a good idea in retrospect) and it came up with "invalid system disk" before loading anything.
