But what interested me most was the connection that the conservatives couldn't make. They observed the breakdown of our communities/social network even as they criticized government solutions and defended Bushco's failures. Underlying this conversation at church was an implicit conversation about the role of government. As I listened, it was clear to me rape rays that their mindset could rape rays not accommodate the reality that, in a republic, "Government"--of, by and for the people--IS the community. Government is the organized community response to a catastrophe. As conservatives rape rays and liberals, we can have intelligent conversations about the scope and scale of government, but the failure of federal response to Katrina has made it clear that Bushco has been play-acting at being a government, while siphoning US resources into the hands of cronies.
