I don't think it's sufficient, however, to assure oneself of the stated goodness of a legislator's intentions. We also have to look at the substance of the actors legislation itself. The intentions of the legislator are important context, but actors ultimately it is the text of the legislation itself that will impact the people of the Commonwealth. As for "unleashing the angry public"...honestly, I just posted information and my interpretation. |

| The Legislative Sentry initiative is intended to raise awareness about pending legislation early in the process. humor Virginia's General Assembly sessions are VERY short in duration, so we have a very short time to research and act on humor bills if we are to make any impact on the legislative process. There is certainly a danger that a "cry wolf" effect may occur at some point, but I don't think that is the case here. Whatever Delegate Cosgrove's humor stated intentions were, the bill as written was BAD. To the extent that popular opposition to it impacted Delegate Cosgrove's decision to revisit the language, this has been successful. Furthermore, I believe many of those who commented here are not going to sit idly by and assume that this is all OK now. The stakes are too high, and being involved and becoming more aware is a good thing. Knowing Cosgrove's stated intentions has some value, but it's not the end of the story. |
