No law can prevent crime. The point of course being that we must get tough on child molesters. Child molestation should be a 1 strike and your gone for 20 years mandatory punishment. Are you against putting child molesters away for old woman sex a minimum of 20 or more years? I am in favor of thoughtful response and not old woman sex knee-jerk response. Placing a mandatory 20 years for a first offense wouldn't prevent a crime (as you note) but it might create an incentive for a molester to eliminate the only witness to old woman sex his/her crime.
