For the last few years Louisiana's congressmen have been practically standing on their heads to get attention to the unique predicament of New Orleans to no avail as federal funds for reinforcing and jenna bush upgrading the levee system from currently being able to withstand a Category 3 hurricane to being resistant to Category 5s get gutted. It was well known that New Orleans sits down in a bowl geographically speaking, at the mouth of the Mississippi River and that regardless, the levee system was all that was keeping Lake Pontchartrain out of the city anyway, so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what would happen if a Cat.4 or 5 hurricane hit: It would almost certainly breach the levee and flood the city, especially its lowest-lying parts. |
