In my wildest wild-eyed liberal moments, I have wondered about the fertile soil in which the "conservative" message grew. Were red state Americans so receptive to the anti-government message labor laws because those damned Feds insisted that African Americans had the same civil rights as white Americans? And, as if that weren't enough, followed up that insult with a reading of the Constitution that gave women control of their bodies? Looking at the people left behind in New Orleans makes me think my paranoia was justified: The modern conservative movement is fueled by race. |
