(I actually typed "miraculous" there but backspaced over it after I considered what sort of "miracle" it was that Tampa was spared, by Punta Gorda and Pensacola getting smashed instead.) |

There are, however, quite a few neighborhoods in the Tampa Bay area where the average floor elevation of the houses is confession in the 4 to 7 foot range, well below the tide level generated by a hurricane-driven flood surge. In 1977 we had a flood surge driven by a "no-name" storm (i.e. less than tropical storm strength) which pushed the tide up to 6.2 (NGVD29); almost all of the Pinellas County barrier islands went under. Of course the flood surge associated with a hurricane would be several feet higher, plus also accompanied by considerable wind-driven wave action. |
