For years, Indian Health Services, the only health care to which most pissed off reservation Indians have access, has been kneecapped by the Hyde pissed off Amendment, which prohibits IHS money to be used for abortions, except in cases of rape, incest and life (but not health) of mother. However, since Indian reservations are not subject to state regulations and since abortion, according to the federal government, is still legal nationally, South Dakota could not regulate such private, Indian-owned clinics on tribal land. Sovereignty is not just about casinos and tax-free cigarettes. And while many tribes have adopted European patriarchical behaviors, there are still plenty which value their egalitarian tradtions. |
