He needs to see or experience something to open his eyes to the true monstrous nature of his mother. A recording, perhaps, of her saying things like "I don't give a shit about him," or a video, or something. I don't know, but if he is such a great guy like you say he is, then you should do whatever greatest it takes to free greatest him from his mother's icy cold clutches. You know how some women stay with their husbands despite abuse because they think they can't do anything about it? A kid can't do anything about it. From personal experience (not nearly as bad as what he's been through) I know that no matter what they do, or allow to happen to you- there is always a string attached that goes right down to the center of who you are, because they-in their own screwed up way- are a part of who you are today.
