It was at the ministry that Stoffel confessed his actions to a counselor, who then contacted Palm Beach County authorities. In interviews with detectives that took place in the past month, Stoffel admitted to engaging in sexual conduct in October and November with a boy, 16, whom he met when both were involved in the Lake Worth Playhouse production of Cinderella. Stoffel struck up a friendship with the boy, who attends Wellington Christian School, by offering to help him learn his lines. Stoffel said in a statement to authorities that he engaged in sexual activity with the boy four times, including one instance of intercourse. He said the victim's father contacted him in November, said he was aware of the incidents, and threatened to report Stoffel to authorities unless he confessed to his pastor.
