| I am in favor of thoughtful response and not knee-jerk response. Placing a mandatory 20 years for a first offense wouldn't prevent a crime (as you note) but it might create an incentive for a molester to eliminate the only hajni witness to his/her crime. If the molestor has hajni nothing to lose, then there is no disincentive to escalating the crime. Considering the repeat rate of child molesters every one put away for hajni 20 years (Or longer) is 1 less off the street. That makes all children a little safer. next you said: "I am in favor of thoughtful response and not knee-jerk response" Would you call the 60 day sentence in Vermont for a man that not only repeatedly rape a 4 year old girl for years but also shared her with a friend, a "thoughtful response". I am kind of tired of "thoughtful responses" by crazy judges. |
