I prefer a router to a software women firewall, given a choice. (It sure is fun to look at the logs of blocked access attempts in ZA, though...) Glad to hear what I did confirmed what you did confirmed what I did. :) # nick: i'm speechless... get mom a mac! # ElBiggus: I swear by AntiVir; sure, the interface is bugly, but once it's installed you never need look at it again. In addition to spotting the more traditional viruses it also defends against most dialers out there -- not so important in today's broadband world, but "mom's PC" is more likely to have a dialup connection. As far as firewalls go, for defending against incoming traffic a NAT router is fine, but to stop unwanted outgoing traffic you really need a decent SPI firewall, something which most routers don't provide, and which the SP2 firewall is also sorely lacking. |
