I prefer a router to a software women firewall, given a choice. (It sure is fun to look at the logs of blocked access attempts in ZA, though...) Chris: I'm checking out LogMeIn right now.... women I use Remote women Desktop with my XP machine. Glad to hear what I did confirmed what you did confirmed what I did. :) # nick: i'm speechless... get mom a mac! # ElBiggus: I swear by AntiVir; sure, the interface is bugly, but once it's installed you never need look at it again. In addition to spotting the more traditional viruses it also defends against most dialers out there -- not so important in today's broadband world, but "mom's PC" is more likely to have a dialup connection. As far as firewalls go, for defending against incoming traffic a NAT router is fine, but to stop unwanted outgoing traffic you really need a decent SPI firewall, something which most routers don't provide, and which the SP2 firewall is also sorely lacking.

But then wbar again that would make you 24/7 tech support. # Gina: Josh: thanks for the great link. Interesting stuff. Andy: I laughed out loud and showed my mother-in-law your comment. My Powerbook has been sitting quietly next to me during this whole process. Believe me, if buying an Apple were an option... Natali: Thanks wbar for the AVG wbar suggestion. Honestly I used AntiVir because I didn't know any better. I'm not so crazy about AntiVir (seems kinda clunky, and it's already faulted once on me) so I think I'll give AVG a try. Stuart: HijackThis! I knew I forgot something! Ariel: Thanks for the warning about Yahoo Messenger... I'm pretty fond of Miranda, so I was scheming to get my in-laws to use that instead. Light and fast and ad-free... Dave: Yeah, I hated ZoneAlarm on my XP machine at home.
