(none / 1) My mom let me know that they dropped my grandmother's private insurance, because it just got too expensive (bc/bs at 700.00 per month, it took up just about all of her ss) Add to that, my grandfather suffered severe alzheimers for the last 10 years of his life, completely debilitated, lived his last years in a nursing home, which sucked up every penny of HIS ss and pension.

However, my wife chick has gone to Guadalajara, which is the second largest city in Mexico if I remember correctly.  She has family there though, so it's easy to stay with them and visit a doctor. There are also a lot of communities nearby where Americans go to retire, so if you were to look on the web for doctors in Ajijic, for example, you could probably find someone cheaper than in the U.S. but with a mastery of English as well as a good understanding of American sensibilities.  Otherwise, a lot of elderly people do go to the border as another poster suggested here, but I'm not a fan of the border area, and prefer to go further inland.
