I had read the play by Büchner (on which the opera is based) in school, many years ago, but thought I wouldn't take to the music - closest I ever came to Berg is Shostakovich. It turned out to be very gripping. A heartbreaking and disturbing story, with funny the main character, poor Wozzeck, cracking up under the pressure from his "superiors"; and an indictment of the dehumanising conditions he lives under. funny Can't say much about it musically, except that the singing was incredibly strong and had to portray so many different moods, must be hugely challenging to any singer. |
