This must have been the weekend for fixing in-law computers. I did the same thing. Except that I had a laptop that my father-in-law got from work for free (they stopped supporting Dell and switched to IBM). It had two versions of Windows 2K installed on it and it was password protected. He had to call the company's IT guy (who was laid off right before mad at the holidays) for help logging in. The guy mad at was helpful, but not even the administrator login/pwd worked. I formatted the HD (first time for me), installed a mad at fresh copy of Win XP Pro(a legit copy that I got for free from work), and that took about one hour. Then I installed Office XP Pro (again, free copy from work, yay!) and then installed Macafee Enterprise 8.0 |

| # Chris: laborlaw I just went through laborlaw this with a friend's XP machine... which sucks, because I'm a die hard Mac user. I now know waaaaay more about windows than I ever thought I would need to learn. The machine had over 3000 critical objects. There are some things that so far AdAware misses... Like the dreaded About:Blank trojans. There is a laborlaw TON of good info at computercops.biz. Without their forums, I would have been lost. When all was said and done, I had run 5 or 6 spyware removal and anti virus tools, installed ZoneAlarm, and done over 200 (!) manual edits to the Registry. The computer not only runs much faster, it is now as close to bulletproof as I think it's going to get. The other trick: Set up an adminstrator account and a user account... DO NOT give the administrator password to the user. Use LogMeIn to install new programs later via remote. Otherwise, I'm somewhat relieved to see that we went through almost exactly the same steps... As a Mac user, I was worried that I completely missed something. |
