Comments purely an anecdotal observation, digger, but I don't think it is an increasing phenom, just that it gets monday more press now. In the cases out of monday my jurisdiction that I'm aware of, yes it's more male teacher/female student kind of monday thing (just had an arraignment yesterday where a 33 y/o male softball coach is charged with lewd conduct and illegal sex with a 15 y/o female player) but I think that may because girls are more willing to speak up when this happens. We've had the female teacher thing (and a few just female adult neighbor/friend of family thing too) over the years.
