Schmidt had previously been convicted of child sex crimes in Maryland three times. In 2000, he was released on parole in Maryland after serving 13 years of an 18-year sentence. On May 25, 2005, Schmidt was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by supervised release for life in connection with his guilty plea.
